In the Saint Joe’s sanctuary — this is the first of two (basically identical) training sessions offered this fall. Choose the one that best fits your schedule. Sign up here.
These sessions are open to anyone, but attendance at one of them is strongly recommended for anyone who participates, or wants to participate, in any leadership role of Sunday liturgies — ushering, wine bearing, reading, etc.
The first 15 minutes of each session will be devoted to brass tacks training of ushers.
The next 45 minutes of each session will be devoted to some teaching about the flow of the Sunday service that will be of use and interest to all.
Then we will segue into a brief training of wine bearers and lectors, and conclude with a training of crucifers.
Everyone is welcome to all of this, but if you don’t want to observe or participate in the usher training, you can roll in ten minutes after the start time (that is, you can roll in at 2:10), and if you have no interest in crucifering, you can assume you can leave about 15 minutes before the announced ending time. (And note to Altar Guilders: if anyone needs a Altar Guild refresher, or wants to join Altar Guild, Lachlan and Chris can train you in the half hour after either 90-minute liturgy training session concludes.)
On Sunday 18 September, during our regular Sunday service, we’ll have a giant commissioning of, giving thanks for, and generally celebrating anyone and everyone who is newly trained for a role in Sunday services.
The vicar notes: “I don’t believe in saying something is ‘required’ when, in fact, I will not bar someone from serving in a Sunday liturgy if they absolutely cannot attend these sessions. But please make every effort to attend. They are as close to required as I can make them with a straight face.” We will keep these sessions to 90 minutes, but will start promptly, so please be ready to start on time.
