  • Program offerings for Advent & Christmas

    Advent Greening of the church and Wreath Making, Sunday, December 1, immediately following both the 10:30 am & 6:00 pm Eucharists, we will assemble wreaths to take home and light during the Advent season. After the 10:30 am service we will be greening the church. There will also be a wonderful array of handmade goods donated by St. Josephites on sale. Bracelets, hanging ornaments, bird homes, sewing kits, & additional woven goods on sale ($3-$20), by cash or check.  Revenue supports upcoming installation of our church sound system!

    Book Club, Monday, December 2 from 7:00-8:30 pm at the Vicars House. We will discuss Night Flyer by Tiya Miles. Email Vicar Lauren, vicar@stjosephsdurham.org for the address or more info.

    St. Nick’s hymn sing, Wednesday, December 4, 6:00 pm in the church. All are invited for this fun service, with carols, hot chocolate and Christmas tree decorating.

    Advent Day of Reflection, Saturday, December 7, 9:00 am at Camp New Hope. Chris Redmon (St. Josephite and diocesan intern at The Chapel of the Cross) will lead a retreat that will consider what Advent and sainthood have to do with one another — and how Mary is a model for every saint seeking to bear Christ into the world. There is a $20 registration fee.  Sign-up here.

     Blue Christmas service, Wednesday, December 11, noon at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Hillsborough. Christmas can be a difficult season for those who are grieving, or who in some other way do not conform to cultural expectations around Christmas joy, families at Christmastime, Christmas cheer. St. Matthew’s will be holding a Blue Christmas service for those who are lonely or grieving. If you wish to attend that service with others from St. Joe’s, please contact Patty Michaels at pmichaels45@gmail.com.

    Prison Visitation,Wednesday, December 11, 10:00 am-5:00 pm. Christmas gift distribution and Christmas visiting at the North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women.  

    Parish potluck dinner, Thursday,December 12, 5:30-7:00 pm in the Parish House. Childcare provided. If your last name starts A-M bring: salad/side dish; if N-Z: dessert.

    Lessons and Carols, Sunday, December 15, at 6:00 pm in the church. A series of readings from Scripture, singing and music replaces the evening Eucharist.

    Ackland Museum in Chapel Hill, Tuesday, December 17, at 3:00 pm. Join your priests at the fabulous exhibit of prints at the Ackland Museum in Chapel Hill. Meet at the Ackland; if you want to carpool, email Fr. Lachlan, lachlan@stjosephsdurham.org. Optional post-museum libation at The Crunkleton at 4:15 pm.

    Breakfast Community Christmas Feast, Tuesday, December 24, our Breakfast Community will gather at 10:00 am for brunch. We are looking for donations of festive dishes to serve. So, if you're making a sweet potato casserole or a dish of green beans, consider making two and giving one to Breakfast. Following breakfast there will be a breakfast community Christmas service at 11:30 am. We'll be accepting donations on Sunday the 22nd and the morning of Monday the 23rd, or by appointment. Email Fr.     Join us in the sanctuary for an interactive service to explore the mystery of Jesus’ birth. All ages welcome!

    Join us at 9:00 pm for the Christmas Eve service. Join us for 30 minutes of carol singing preceding the service beginning at 8:30 pm.
